Firefighters run for fallen colleague

MFB firefighters will commence a long distance run from Melbourne to Canberra in honour of David Balfour, the Canberra firefighter killed during the recent Victorian bushfires.

The MFB members will be joined on the run by David’s widow, Celia, twenty Canberra firefighters and five CFA firefighters. The run will finish in Canberra on 2 May 2009. Upon arrival in Canberra, the group will present a cheque to David Balfour’s family.

The group will be farewelled by Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

When: Wednesday 29 April 2009 at 10.30 am

Where: Commencing at the front of the Melbourne Town Hall, corner of Swanston Street and Collins Street, Melbourne

Why: MFB Leading Firefighter and run organiser Paul Ritchie said that it was important for Victoria’s emergency services to support the Balfour family in this way.

“David Balfour looked after us, now it is our turn to repay the favour and support his family as he is unable to do so,” he said.
