A car fire has caused significant damage to a property in Preston early this morning.

MFB firefighters received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls at 5:49am for a car fire threatening a unit in Benambra St. Upon arrival, crews found that the car had rolled into a single unit which caught fire and spread to the front room.

Occupants of the surrounding units were initially unable to evacuate due to the location of the fire but were not under immediate threat.

Firefighters in Breathing Apparatus worked quickly and commenced an aggressive attack on the fire to allow the occupants to be escorted to safety.

It took 20 minutes to bring the fire under control and the affected unit has sustained significant damage.

Two women were assessed at the scene by Ambulance Victoria.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate.
