Garage fire in Ivanhoe East

31 Jan 2019
More than 20 firefighters battled a garage fire that broke out in Ivanhoe East just before 9pm.

MFB crews were alerted to the fire after a neighbour saw smoke issuing from the property on Burke Road and called Triple Zero (000).

Crews arrived at the scene in just over six minutes and found a single story brick garage fully alight. The high fuel load in the garage, including a number of gas cylinders, made firefighting efforts challenging. However, firefighters made an aggressive attack on the blaze and brought it under control in just over an hour.

Firefighters will remain on scene to safely secure the gas cylinders which were venting due to the excessive heat. A community warning has been issued for the smell of gas in the area and residents are advised to monitor conditions via the VicEmergency website.

Two occupants of the residence self-evacuated before MFB crews arrived and the other two occupants were escorted to safety by firefighters. The occupants were assessed at the scene by Ambulance Victoria for possible smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and MFB’s fire investigators will attend at first light.
