Garage fire spreads to Balwyn home

A single storey brick house was severely damaged by fire this afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the home on Dumblane Street in Balwyn North at 12.21pm.

The fire started in a garage and spread to the house and the roof.

Asbestos was found in the building and breathing apparatus was worn.

Two residents, who were home at the time, evacuated safely when they discovered the fire.

The damage is estimated to be in excess of $100,000.

The cause has not yet determined and is under investigation.

There were no injuries reported.

Seven appliances and 18 firefighters attended the incident.
