Residents in a 200m radius of a worksite have been evacuated after a gas leak this afternoon.

Workmen ruptured a nine inch gas main, whilst working on an easement on Bellevue Avenue in Burwood East about 11.30am.

Firefighters used water sprays to disperse gas vapour.

Gas detection equipment has been set up in the surrounding area and drains to monitor gas levels.

A community advice warning issued at 1.25pm advising people the incident was under control.

Crews will be in attendance until main is shut down and repaired
