A gas main was accidentally severed by contract workers in Garden Avenue

A 75ml high pressure gas main located in the Garden Avenue nature strip was accidentally severed by contract workers just before 11:00 am.

Triple 000 callers reported a strong odour and hissing sound coming from the ground.

Crews arrived on scene quickly and worked efficiently to isolate power and evacuate four nearby properties as a precaution.

Victoria Police assisted at the scene by redirecting traffic after closing off two nearby roads.

MFB specialist air monitoring equipment was also utilised to monitor explosive levels until the arrival of the gas company as gas was emitting from the damaged area as well as storm water drains.

The gas leak was sealed and the area declared safe around 2:30pm and residents were advised to return to their homes.

No injuries were reported and a community warning has been issued.
