25 Oct 2018
MFB crews are currently on scene at a gas leak after a Triple Zero (000) caller noted a strong smell of gas in Napier Street in Footscray.

The leak was caused after a worker broke through a high pressure gas main in Napier street.

Five appliances including the Hazmat unit are working to secure the area. Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus are using water streams to disperse the gas.

Residents of a nearby a residential building were evacuated and a neighbouring school was contacted to advise students not to travel towards the incident.

There are no reported injuries.

Napier Street has been closed to foot and vehicle traffic.

A community warning has been issued for local residents to close windows, turn off air-conditioning and remain inside until further notice.
