Gelobar blaze on Lygon Street

A popular ice-cream shop in Brunswick East has been damaged in a suspicious fire overnight.

Crews were called to Gelobar on Lygon Street at 2:42am.

Witnesses spotted smoke coming from the roof of the two-storey building and called Triple Zero.

On arrival, firefighters found the blaze had taken hold on the second storey and worked to contained it to the western side of the property.

Trams along Lygon Street were stopped for almost two hours to allow emergency services access to fight the fire.

The fire was brought under control at 3:36am and deemed a crime scene, with Victoria Police arson squad requested to attend.
