MFB and CFA firefighters have stopped the spread of a fire which ripped through a Wheelers Hill park this afternoon.

Approximately 35 firefighters were called to the incident at Jells Park just after midday following numerous Triple Zero calls (000).

They arrived to find a large grass and scrub fire and a number of smaller fires around the lake and south east and north west corners of the park.

Firefighters used water from the lake to help extinguish the blaze and brought in firefighting aircraft to assist ground crews.

Firefighters managed to get the incident under control just before 2pm.

Sections of the park remain closed while emergency servies operations continue.

Community members are advised to avoid the area where possible.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and Victoria Police is investigating.
