Hampton residents evacuated after gas pipe ruptured

Firefighters are on scene at a gas leak in Hampton.

MFB was alerted to a ruptured gas main on Linacre Road, which was hit by a worker using machinery just before 9am.

The main is approximately 65mm in diameter, houses around the scene have been evacuated and traffic has been stopped for 200 metres either side of the leak.

MFB firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus are using water sprays to disperse the gas cloud.

The gas company has been notified and is proceeding.

Police are assisting evacuating residents in the immediate area and shutting down ignition sources.

The incident is ongoing at this time.
