A plume of dark smoke alerted locals to a house fire in Hawthorn East early Thursday night.

MFB firefighters were called to the property on Bowler St just after 5pm following several Triple Zero (000) callers reporting smoke issuing from the property.

Initial crews arrived on scene within five minutes to find a fire at the rear of the double story property which had extended into the roof space.

Firefighters quickly set up a number of hose lines to prevent the fire from spreading and also utilised the teleboom appliance to extinguish the fire in the roof.

The incident was declared under control at 5:45pm. Thankfully no one was home at the time.

The roof of the home has collapsed due to the fire. Crews are expected to remain on scene for some time to carry out firefighting duties and ensure the safety of the premises.

It is not known what started the blaze and the cause of the fire will be investigated.
