Fifty firefighters tackled the blaze as students and neighbours looked on.

The large fire severely damaged one wing of the Olympic Village Primary School in Southern Road Heidelberg West last night.

MFB firefighters arrived on scene just after 8pm to find the art room and music room totally involved with fire through the roof. Another two classrooms of the four-room block were severely damaged by heat and smoke.  Commander Frank Besanko has estimated the damage to be around $1 million.

A lack of available water hampered firefighting for a short time, whilst alternative supplies were sourced.  MFB firefighters worked extremely well, under difficult conditions, to stop the spread of fire from entering an adjoining wing of the school. The heat from the fire was so intense it melted the decals off one fire appliance.

One MFB firefighter was treated on scene for heat stress.

MFB Specialist Fire Investigators will attend today to continue investigations into the cause of the fire.  A total of 14 appliances were on scene, with about 50 firefighters tackling the blaze.
