StKilda's historic Stokehouse restaurant has been destroyed by fire overnight.

MFB crews were called to the fire at the Stokehouse restaurant just after 11pm last night following reports of a fire in the kitchen. When first crews arrived the ground floor was heavily involved in fire and was spreading to the second floor. Given the wooden materials and the open areas the fire gained intensity very quickly and was fanned by strong westerly onshore wind. Due to the ferocity of the fire and threats of building collapse crews withdrew and conducted defensive attack.

It took 76 firefighters three hours to bring the fire under control and firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to manage the fire which was still burning strongly within.  No cause has been determined at this time and MFB Fire Investigators are on site. Early estimates would suggest the value of the damage to be approximately $1million dollars. The venue has been totally destroyed.

Restaurant staff evacuated some 200 patrons prior to the MFB arriving on scene.
