A home in Hughesdale has suffered extensive damage after a fire broke out just after 6am.

Crews arrived at the home on LaTrobe Street in less than six minutes and were met with a single story home issuing flames and smoke from the rear. The fire moved quickly into the roof space and was threatening surrounding properties.

More than 20 firefighters launched an internal attack on the blaze and used water lines to protect the homes on either side.

The fire was under control in just over an hour.

The occupants safely evacuated before firefighters arrived and there are no reports of injury.

MFB fire investigators will attend to determine the cause of the blaze.
