Investigation into cause of China Bar blaze continues

A popular city restaurant has been seriously damaged by fire overnight.

Firefighters were called to China Bar on the corner of Russell and Lonsdale streets about 5.40pm.

The fire spread from the flue in the kitchen to the ceiling and sub floor space.

MFB received numerous calls alerting us to the fire and extra resources were despatched to attack the fire and support crews on scene.

A public warning was issued due to the traffic congestion in the city and the amount of smoke in the city area.

Three people were treated on scene by Ambulance Victoria for minor smoke inhalation and allowed to leave the scene.

The fire took one hour to bring under control. Breathing apparatus was in use.

Damage bill is expected to exceed $250,000

The cause is still being investigated.
