An effective sprinkler system helped keep blaze in check

Just after 4pm today, MFB received a call from an automated alarm, quickly followed up by a 000 call from someone on site, to a fire in a large shed at a mattress recycling plant.

On arrival crews found the building well alight, due to the mattress shredding machine catching fire, and the fire subsequently spread to a number of surrounding mattresses.

MFB firefighters aggressively tackled the blaze, aided by a sprinkler system which helped to keep the fire in check.

The fire took one hour and 17 minutes to bring under control, and crews will remain on scene for the next few hours to extinguish the remaining hot spots and monitor the situation.

Seven appliances and 20 firefighters tackled the blaze.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.
