Fire deemed under control in just over an hour

Just before 7.30pm this evening MFB firefighters responded to several calls of smoke issuing from a two storey building in Montague Street.

Arriving on scene the building was heavily involved in fire, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus conducted an internal attack, containing the fire to the ground floor.

The adjoining premises sustained slight fire damage and a community warning was issued due to heavy smoke in the area.

The fire was deemed under control in just over an hour and the cause of the fire will be investigated in the morning.

26 firefighters and seven appliances tackled the blaze.
