07 Nov 2011
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade is investigating the cause of electrical switchboard fires.

The investigation follows three fires in the past four weeks that have occurred in wiring in switchboards that have Smart Meters installed.

MFB Chief Fire Officer Shane Wright said MFB responded to about 26 fires in switchboards each year.

He said it was MFB’s duty to investigate any trend or cause of any incidents it attends.

“At this stage there is no evidence that Smart Meters were responsible for the three recent fires,” he said.

“This investigation is about fact finding because at this stage it is only conjecture.”

MFB Fire Investigation and Analysis Unit will examine all recent fires in switchboards to determine the cause.

A report will be prepared for Energy Safe Victoria and the Chief Electrical Inspector.
