MFB firefighters are currently on scene at two separate factory fires in Thomastown.

Crews were called to a panel beating premises on Blaxland Avenue shortly before 1.30pm and arrived to find a fire at the rear of the building.

Firefighters mounted an aggressive internal attack on the blaze and managed to get it under control in about 20 minutes.

Just after 3pm, firefighters were called to a tyre factory in Wood Street after smoke was spotted and the alarm was raised.

The fire was located at the rear of the factory and involved a line of tyres 15 metres in length.

The blaze sent thick black smoke drifting over nearby Dalton Road.

Firefighters arrived to find the fire was threatening two other nearby factories with flames as high as the buildings.

They worked quickly to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes and stop it from spreading.

Occupants in nearby factories were evacuated as a precaution.

The cause of each fire is unknown at this stage.
