MFB assisted police and ambulance in a search and rescue effort overnight (31 May) after a man attempted to swim the Maribyrnong River.

Despite a major search operation the 32-year-old was not found for some time. MFB crews eventually found him about 500 metres upstream from where he entered the water at Ascot Vale West.

They gave emergency medical assistance and CPR when they recovered the unconscious man who was then handed to Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

Despite the CPR and treatment at the recovery scene the man died at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
