MFB firefighters forced entry to the burning unit with reports that an elderly lady was inside.

Date: August 17, 2011
Time: 07:53 hours
Call Number: 4979

Address: Robinson Road, Hawthorn

Firefighters searched and found the 90 year old lady huddled in the corner of her bedroom and trapped by fire and smoke.

MFB firefighters rescued the semi conscious lady and provided oxygen therapy until the arrival of the ambulance.

Meanwhile additional MFB crews continued to attack the fire which had penetrated the roof and was complicated with asbestos issues.    The structural integrity of the unit will be checked by the local building surveyor.

MFB crews were on scene within 5 1/2 minutes of receiving the fire call and this enabled an early rescue and the fire being contained within a further 5 minutes.  Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the morning to continue to extinguish and maintain a fire duty.

Specialist MFB Fire Investigators are currently on scene to determine the cause of the fire which is unknown at this time.

50% of the 3 bedroom, single storey unit (rear of a group of 8 units), has been severely damaged by fire.

Attending Appliances: 6
Number of firefighters: 24

Officer in charge: Commander Col Matheson
