Major Fire At Waste Paper Plant

back to list
16 Jun 2011
A fire at the Amcor waste paper plant has kept crews busy overnight.

Date: June 15, 2011
Time: 18:15 hours
Call Number: 4918

Address: Heidelberg Rd, Alphington.

The fire was very hard to reach and extinguish, due to stacks of thousands of tonnes of waste paper. The plant was full of smoke and making it impossible to see the fire let alone fight it.

The MFB High Angle Rescue Team was deployed to the roof area of the 80m x 50m building to remove roofing iron so as to let the smoke escape and allow the fire fighting effort to continue.

The extent of the fire has not been established due to the smoke logging. When the smoke is removed, front end loaders and fork lifts will be used to pull the bales of paper apart and extinguish the fire. This is expected to take some time. The surrounding area was monitored for toxic smoke emissions but none were found.
