Major fire in Pascoe Vale

back to list
04 Feb 2011
A major fire extensively damaged a former Bunnings hardware store in Pascoe Vale last night.

Date: February 3, 2011
Time: 21:31 hours
Call Number 1000

Address: Corner of Sussex St and Gaffney St, Pascoe Vale.

The fire spread quickly throughout the large 50m x 20m two storey brick structure despite the building being empty.  The intense heat caused the building’s facade to explode; raining debris over roads and nearby properties and forced Police to evacuate approximately 100 residents from their homes for just over an hour.

The fire took 45 minutes to bring under control and a further two hours to extinguish.  The MFB will have some crews remain at the scene overnight to prevent any possibility of re-ignition.

Damage to the building is extensive with most of the roof collapsing along with some of the walls.

The cause of the fire has been deemed suspicious and the Police Arson Squad notified.
