Crews have attended a major natural gas leak on Riversdale Road

Workers on Riversdale Road in Hawthorn struck a gas pipe causing a large leak of natural gas early this afternoon.

The workers were quick to evacuate the site and immediately called Triple 000.

Crews arrived on scene around 12:50pm and dispersed the vapours with water spray.

The Gas Authority also called in equipment to help deal with the incident and the leak was plugged just before 5:00pm.

The major leak caused the closure of Riversdale Road between Glenferrie Road and Auburn Road and a community warning was issued to alert residents in the immediate area to close doors and windows and take shelter inside.
