A 53-year-old male has helped rescue a mother and two children from their blazing home in Mulgrave earlier this afternoon. Two working smoke alarms alerted the mother to the blaze.

The male helped the family escape the fire and was subsequently treated at the scene by Ambulance Victoria for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were recorded.

The damage bill has been estimated at $250,000 as the house will probably have to be demolished due to the extensive damage.

Two working smoke alarms alerted the mother to the blaze.

A watching duty will continue in to the evening to wet down smouldering hot spots.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by specialist MFB fire investigators.
