A man has suffered burns after attempting to extinguish a fire in Taylors Lakes overnight.

Firefighters were called to the Plenty Close address around 3.45am and arrived to find the garage in flames and the fire spreading to the front of the adjoining house.

It took approximately 26 firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control.

A mother and three children safely evacuated, however a man was injured attempting to extinguish the fire himself. He was transported to hospital by Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

MFB Commander Roger Chitty urged community members not to take matters into their own hands.

"Your life and the lives of your loved ones are the most important things," he said.

"If you smell smoke or see flames, get everyone out of danger immediately.

"Once you are out, call Triple Zero (000). Our firefighters are able to respond very quickly. We will be on scene in minutes and have the training and equipment required to handle any emergency situation.

"Never fight the fire yourself."
