Two people have been evacuated following a house fire in Oakleigh South this morning.

Two people have been evacuated following a house fire in Oakleigh South this morning.

MFB firefighters were called to the two storey house in Dowling Road just before 11.30am.

When they arrived, crews in breathing apparatus entered the building and discovered a mattress on fire.

They safely evacuated two occupants and swiftly extinguished the fire.

Ambulance Victoria paramedics treated an elderly woman who appeared to be suffering smoke inhalation.

The blaze caused significant damage to an upstairs bedroom, along with smoke and water damage to the rest of the property.

MFB Fire Investigators will investigate the cause of the fire.
