Firefighters have been called to Rothsay Lane in Melbourne's CBD following reports of a rubbish fire.

The initial call came in just after midnight and on arrival, crews found a number of pallets and rubbish on fire, with exposures on surrounding buildings up to the 3rd floor.

A number of the buildings surrounding the laneway experienced alarm activations and exterior sprinklers were activated due to the heat and smoke.

250 people were evacuated from the surrounding buildings and trams were stopped along Flinders Street for the duration of the fire.

Around 45 firefighters had the blaze under control in under 10 minutes.

The fire has been deemed suspicious.
