06 Aug 2018
Firefighters have evacuated 60 residents from a high rise building on Batman Street after a fire started in a kitchen on the 12th floor just after 7pm this evening.

Crews arrived on scene in just over two minutes in response to the building’s automatic fire alarm.

The blaze began to spread after a cooktop and range hood caught alight, causing smoke to extend to the floors above and below.

One person was treated by Ambulance Victoria paramedics after they suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked to extinguish the blaze, and are currently ventilating the building.

It is expected the evacuees will be able to return to their apartments shortly.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria personnel are on scene assisting.
