23 Jul 2019
Firefighters were called to an apartment building on Jeffcott Street in West Melbourne this afternoon after a caller saw smoke issuing from the property.

Initial crews arrived on scene just before 4pm and immediately entered the building wearing breathing apparatus in an attempt to contain the blaze.

They quickly found the fire originated in the kitchen on the third floor and were able to stop the blaze from spreading to surrounding units.

The fire was brought under control just after 4:14pm, with more than 30 firefighters working together at the scene. The building is heavily smoked lodged due to the fire and crews are working to ventilate the premises to make it safe for occupants.

At the height of the fire there were nine firefighting appliances on scene as well a commander unit.
