More than 30 MFB firefighters worked to save neighbouring properties from a fire which engulfed a unit in Carnegie this afternoon.
MFB firefighters were dispatched to the Libna Street unit just before 1:20pm after several calls to Triple Zero (000) were made by neighbours.
On arrival the crews found the unit at the rear of a property well alight and producing a large amount of smoke.
At the height of the fire there were 10 firefighting appliances on scene, and one commander unit.
Crews attacked the blaze worked to bring it under control at 2:55pm, despite the very difficult firefighting conditions.
Due to the amount of smoke in the surrounding area, a community advice message was issued for Bentleigh East, Carnegie, Murrumbeena, and Ormond.
The community are asked to avoid the area and ensure the roads are kept clear for emergency services.
