Cheltenham grassfire deemed suspicious

Victoria Police will investigate a grassfire which ripped through Cheltenham yesterday.

Crews from MFB a were called to the grasslands on Park Road, about 2.15pm and arrived within three minutes to find a large grass and scrub fire burning out of control.

The fire quickly grew considerably in size, travelling in a southerly direction.

Victoria Police acted quickly to evacuate residents in Glebe Avenue, Cheltenham, as a precautionary measure.

Firefighters used helicopters and aerial appliances to knock down the fire while crews attacked it from the ground.

At the height of the blaze approximately 90 firefighters from MFB and CFA were battling the blaze.

It was under control within three hours but crews have remained on scene overnight to monitor the area and ensure there are no hotspots or reignition.

After further investigation today, MFB Fire Investigators have determined the fire is suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate the incident.
