13 Jun 2019
Firefighters have stopped a shed fire at a property in Newport overnight and saved the home.

Crews were responded to the Maddox Street address just after 10:30pm following several calls to triple zero (000).

Firefighters arrived on scene six minutes later and found the shed well alight, with exposures on two sides.

Wearing breathing apparatus for protection from the smoke, approximately 28 firefighters attacked the blaze from both Maddox and Laurie Streets to stop the fire from spreading.

Their efforts ensured the fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes, and limited the damage to the 5 x 5m shed, as well as a boat, fence and pergola.

At the height of the blaze there were six fire fighting appliances at the scene including an aerial appliance, along with four other units. Crews remained on scene overnight monitoring the area for hot spots.

At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown. MFB’s specialist Fire Investigation Unit will attend the scene this morning to conduct a detailed analysis.
