Firefighters have battled a fire at a Moorabbin factory this evening.

Crews were called to the Nelson Street building shortly after 9.30pm with witnesses reporting the factory was "well alight".

The first two fire appliances arrived on scene in less than 7 minutes.

On arrival crews found a single storey factory 20 X 60 metres with the front section well involved in fire, additional fire appliances were requested to attend.

Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire with a combination of hoses and an aerial appliance to ensure that the fire did not spread to the adjoining factory that shares a common wall.

No injuries have been reported.

A community warning for smoke on the west side of Chesterville Rd has been issued.

The fire was declared under control at 10.50pm.

No cause has been identified at this early stage of the incident.

The general public is advised to avoid the area and the MFB will be in attendance for a number of hours.

Police and Ambulance are assisting the MFB at the scene.
