Highett Factory Fire

Firefighters were quick to bring a factory under control in just under an hour on Wannan Street in Highett.

MFB crew were called just before 9:45pm this evening and arrived on scene in just under five minutes.

The 40 by 70 meter building was fully involved and producing a large amount of smoke.

Approximately 50 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used aerial appliances to attack the blaze from multiple sides.

Three nearby homes were evacuated and there are no reported injuries.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria also assisted on scene.

A Watch and Act message has been issued advising the community to stay indoors, close their doors and windows, and turn off any heating and cooling systems.

Rowan Road and Wanna Street are currently closed in both directions. The community is asked to avoid the area and keep the roads clear for emergency services.

At this stage the cause of the blaze has not been determined.
