07 Feb 2019
A lighting strike has sparked a fire which ripped through a house in Preston last night.

It's believed lightning from the storm which swept across Melbourne struck a gas meter, setting the house ablaze.

MFB crews were called to the incident on Penola Street about 7.40pm and arrived to find the house fully alight.

A community warning was issued due to smoke in the area.

At the height of the incident, about 30 firefighters were battling the blaze, which was brought under control in 45 minutes.

Two people were evacuated and Victoria Police assisted them with finding alternative accommodation

MFB Fire Investigators will examine the scene this morning to determine the cause of the incident.
