back to list
04 Feb 2019
More than 65 firefighters are battling an apartment fire on Spencer Street after reports of smoke and flames from the building.

Crews were alerted to the blaze at 5:43am and the incident was quickly upgraded after the building was noted to have combustible cladding.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus are attacking the fire internally and aerial appliances including the ladder platform and teleboom are attacking the fire externally.

At this time there are no reported injuries.

Spencer Street is blocked off in both directions and the community is urged to stay clear of the area so emergency services can respond.

The fire is not yet under control and crews are expected to remain on scene for some time.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are also on scene.

UPDATE as of 8:51am:

The fire was deemed under control at 6:49am.

Initial reports suggest the fire started on the side of the building on the 22nd floor and moved up the outside of the building and spread through to the 27th floor. The floors were affected by smoke and fire.

Victoria Police is assisting with evacuations and relocation of residents.
