Special Recognition Awards announced

Yesterday MFB’s eleventh annual Long and Good Service Awards were held at the MCG.

These awards celebrated more than 1000 combined years of service by firefighters and corporate staff. MFB Station Officer Ian Grindlay was awarded with 50 years of service to the organisation, while two brothers, Leading Firefighter Ian Barnes and Workplace Health and Safety Advisor  Roger Barnes have served a combined 85 years.

The ceremony also recognised firefighters and corporate staff who have recently completed academic qualifications.

The following Special Recognition Awards and Scholarships were also announced:

CEO’s Safety Award

This award is open to individuals or teams in recognition of notable, outstanding demonstration of working positively to build the culture, innovation, leadership or peer intervention that builds the foundation of MFB safety.

This year’s CEO’s Safety Award was presented to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Adam Dalrymple, Commander Mark Carter, Manager Economics & Strategic Projects Julian Yaxley and Manager & Senior Engineer Fire Safety Tass Georgas for their important work in advocating for regulatory reform for flammable cladding.

The Lacrosse building fire took place in the early morning hours of 25 November 2014. While there were no fatalities or serious injuries, the fire directly affected approximately 500 people and raised serious questions about the building’s external wall cladding system. In the aftermath of this fire, the team authored a number of expert reports and submissions aimed at addressing the shortcomings in the current building regulation. They also provided testimony at Senate Inquiries and contributed to the work of the Victorian Government Cladding Taskforce.

CEO’s Special Recognition Award

This award recognises an individual or group for excellence in leadership, team work, outstanding community service, innovation or continuous improvement.

This year’s CEO’s Special Recognition Award was presented to Leading Firefighter Jamie Baker, for his dedication and commitment to the Let Me Know Committee and his work on improving the mental health and wellbeing of firefighters.

Jamie was a founding member of the Let Me Know Committee and has been working tirelessly for over two years to develop a mental health and wellbeing mobile app that will allow MFB staff to record and monitor their wellbeing, access online resources, and seek support. Jamie’s enthusiasm for this project has been influential in the organisation, and he has dedicated a considerable amount of personal time to meet with developers, key stakeholders and find avenues in which to drive this project forward.

Chief Officer’s Scholarship

This scholarship is a unique opportunity for an operational staff member to expand their skill set, complete a research or study project, and make a positive impact on the organisation and the sector.

This year’s Chief Officer’s Scholarship was awarded to Station Officer Sarah Lostia for the project “Firefighters Maternity Package for the 21st Century”.

Sarah has eleven years’ service at MFB and has taken an active interest in the study of maternity practices and return to work policies and procedures to establish industry best practice for pregnant firefighters. This scholarship will allow Sarah to travel to the United Kingdom and Canada as part of her research. Her study will include an investigation into past experience and practice within the MFB, and research into fire services’ maternity packages overseas and how they are implemented, with a focus on the London Fire Brigade, which has 300 female firefighters in its ranks. Sarah’s findings will add significant value to diversity and inclusion practices within Victoria’s emergency services.
