Almost 30 firefighters have brought a fire which took hold of a single storey home in Mitcham under control within 20 minutes of their arrival to the scene.

Crews were called to the Coppin Close address at a quarter past 11 after several community members called Triple Zero (000).

Initial crews were on scene just five minutes later.

Wearing breathing apparatus for protection, firefigthers entered the home and attacked the fire from the inside.

Thankfully, they were able to contain the fire quickly and stop it from spreading.

Firefighters believe the blaze began under suspicious circumstances and the scene will be handed to Victoria Police for further investigation.

MFB is being supported at the scene by AmbulanceVictoria, however there are no reports of injury and no one was inside the home at the time.

At the peak of the fire there were seven firefighting appliances on scene including one aerial and one rescue unit, in addition to two other support units.
