An early morning fire has caused damage estimated at one million dollars to a furniture warehouse and showroom in St Albans.

The blaze at Beds on Collins was reported just after 5am with smoke seen coming from the roof of the single-storey premises.

After gaining access, firefighters conducted an internal attack as the fire was sited deep within the large 30m x 40m structure.

All crews entering the building wore breathing apparatus due to the dense, acrid smoke.

An adjoining Bingo hall was checked to see if the fire had broken through but it was found to be untouched.

MFB firefighters were well assisted by CFA crews and had the blaze brought under control in less than an hour.

The cause has been deemed suspicious and the scene has been handed over to the Police to continue the investigation.

MFB and CFA sent 18 appliances to the incident, with 60 firefighters on scene.

A Community Warning was also issued, requesting nearby residents to close their windows and doors and report any health concerns to Nurse on Call.
