Million dollar damage bill for Donovan's restaurant fire

An iconic St Kilda resturant has been affected by fire overnight.

Shortly after 7pm, Approximately 50 diners, including a wedding party, were evacuated from Donovan's restaurant on Jacka Bvd after a fire spread through the roof area above the kitchen.

Firefighters had difficulty with water supply but managed to stop the fire from spreading through the remainder of the building.

Damage by fire is estimated to be worth about $1 million.

There were no injuries.

Breathing apparatus was used and the fire took approximately 50 minutes to bring under control.  Police and ambulance attended the scene.

The cause is undetermined at this stage and fire investigators are on scene.

Restaurateurs Kevin and Gail have praised the firefighters for managing to save so much of the building and have vowed to reopen.
