Neighbour saves elderly residents from house fire

25 Aug 2013
An elderly Cheltenham couple safely evacuated a burning unit yesterday due to a working smoke alarm and a vigilant neighbour.

The couple were unaware that the roof space of their Cavanagh Street unit was on fire, causing the smoke alarm to activate.

A neighbour who heard the alarm investigated and alerted them.

Fire crews were called to the incident on Sunday August 25 just after 3pm.

The fire was quickly brought under control but the roof frame was extensively damaged.

Damage is estimated to be in excess of $200,000.

The couple have been found alternative accommodation. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

It is important to ensure your elderly relatives and family members know what to do if a smoke alarm activates. For more information visit www.homefiresafety.com.
