Firefighters faced a dangerous blaze in Watsonia on Saturday afternoon.

Crews were called to the Linacre Street home just after 2pm after Triple Zero received numerous reports of explosions and a fire coming from a detached garage to the above property.

Additional appliances were despatched due to the amount of calls, on arrival crews wearing Breathing Apparatus started an aggressive attack on the fire which had engulfed the structure to prevent the fire spreading to the adjacent homes.

The owners were not home at the time.  Crews were faced with the danger of exploding diving cylinders stored within the 10 by five metre brick structure.

Damage is estimated at around $80,000.

The fire was deemed under control in 45 minutes.

A building surveyor from Banyule Council attended to check the structural integrity. Police and AV attended.
