A young couple arrived home early today to find smoke issuing from the rear of their home and smoke alarms operating.

Firefighters were called to the Hartwell Hill Road home in Camberwell at 12.16pm.

Neighbours placed garden hoses on the burning home and MFB Firefighters arrived soon after. The fire took 30 minutes to bring under control.

The main living room of the two-storey, brick veneer home, was extensively damaged with fire extension into the roof.

MFB Commander Brian Rogasch has praised the efforts of MFB Firefighters in swiftly stopping the spread of the fire to the remainder of the home.

No injuries occurred.

The fire was caused by combustible materials coming into contact with the solid wood heater and igniting.

This fire serves as a reminder to ensure that clothes, linen, firewood and all combustibles are kept at least one metre from all heaters.
