Suspicious circumstances surround an early morning fire that extensively damaged an unoccupied house in Woodburn Crescent.

The fire was started in one of the front rooms about 2am and spread within minutes to engulf the entire house.

The blaze was so fierce that several surrounding properties had to be evacuated.

Concerns were also held that some squatters may have become trapped by the flames and two searches were carried out to ensure that no-one was inside.

The fire took almost half an hour to bring under control with CFA firefighters from Greenvale assisting MFB crews in tackling the blaze.

The damage bill has been estimated at $200,000 and police have attended to begin their investigations into the cause.
