Firefighters rushed to a house in Balwyn North this morning after reports of a large house fire.

Crews were dispatched to the Cityview Road home just before 5am.

MFB received a number of calls for explosions and smoke coming from a house, and when firefighters arrived on scene they found a single storey brick veneer house on fire that had penetrated the roof area.

The house is believed to be unoccupied. Firefighters using breathing apparatus quickly gained entry to conduct a search for occupants. Fire damage has been contained to the centre of the house with an estimated damage bill of $200,000.

Asbestos procedures were implemented and the incident was deemed under control in 30 minutes.

The fire has been deemed suspicious.

Fire investigators will work to determine cause.
