A West Footscray apartment has been damaged in an overnight fire.

The unit was the middle in a lot of three units in a development that is currently under construction on Barkly Street and yet to be occupied.

Firefighters were called to the incident  at 11pm.

Neighbours reported seeing thick smoke issuing from the home and attempted to extinguish the fire using garden hoses.

Police were called to close Barkley Street as crews successfully prevented the flames from spreading, protecting neighbouring homes and businesses.

A Community Warning was issued advising local residents to close windows and turn off air conditioning as the smell of smoke in the area will be evident

The fire was deemed under control at 11.49pm.

Ten appliances and several commander staff responded to the incident.

The cause is yet to be determined and crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours.
