Occupants of an Oakleigh home have had a distressing homecoming after unattended candles severely damaged their home this evening.

The family had been using the candles to help ring in the Lunar New Year but left them burning unsupervised in the lounge and arrived home to find their house in flames.

Crews were called to the address on George Street just after 7.30pm and arrived to find a large fire rapidly spreading through the building.

Approximately 30 firefighters battled the ferocious blaze and managed to bring it under control in less than half an hour.

The fire caused significant damage to the two storey house.

Firefighters are urging community members to be vigilant when using candles.

Candle safety tips:

·         The use of open flames should always be supervised.

·         Always extinguish cigarettes, candles, and incense and oil burners before leaving home or going to sleep.

·         Keep curtains and other combustibles away from open flames at all times.

·         Never place candles, burners, cigarettes etc. onto soft furnishings.

·         Ensure children and animals are a safe distance from candles, incense and oil burners.
