An off-duty MFB Firefighter and an off-duty police officer were first on scene at this Ivanhoe house fire.

They both made entry and undertook a search to alert any occupants inside.  They were able to confirm that the elderly residents were not home.

The incident occurred about 7.15am on Belmont Road.

MFB fire appliances arrived on scene only minutes later.

The rear of the single storey, weatherboard home was fully involved and had spread into the roof space of the property.

MFB Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, made an aggressive internal and external attack on the fire preventing its spread to the remainder of the home.

Commander David Wood has praised their actions.

The fire took 30 minutes to bring under control.

The rear of the home, its contents, and roof space has been extensively damaged.

MFB firefighters will remain on scene throughout the morning to continue to extinguish and carry out fire duties.

MFB Fire Investigators will be attending today to determine the cause of the fire.
