Pasta factory ablaze in Somerton

02 Jun 2018
More than 20 fire fighting appliances have been called to a blaze at a pasta factory on Fillo Drive Somerton, which is not yet under control.

The first MFB crews arrived on scene in less than two minutes to find the 80 x 30m building well alight and at risk of spread to neighbouring factories.

Approximately 55 MFB and CFA firefighters wearing breathing apparatus commenced an aggressive external attack on the factory, and ensured that all persons had been evacuated safely.

Due to a tilt-slab wall collapsing and the risk of further structural collapse all firefighting efforts are being conducted externally.

There is significant smoke in the area which is being blown in the direction of Roxburgh Park.

As the smoke is dropping it is impacting nearby properties, and a community ‘Watch and Act’ warning has been issued for Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Craigieburn, Dallas, Epping, Greenvale, Lalor, Meadow Heights, Roxburgh Park, Somerton, Thomastown, and Wollert.

Community are advised to take shelter indoors immediately, close all exterior doors, windows and vents, and ensure heating and cooling systems are turned off.

An emergency alert has been issued for possible people still working in factories to the north and east of the fire to evacuate now out of the smoke.

There are no injuries, and Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police teams are on scene assisting.

MFB’s Specialist Fire Investigation Unit will be deployed to determine the cause as soon as possible.

It is expected that emergency service personnel will remain on scene into the night.
